Project Synergy: DEA Raids in 35 States, 5 Countries Target Synthetics

The DEA conducted the largest-ever synthetic drug operation Wednesday, targeting businesses such as headshops, smoke shops, convenience stores, online retailers, and importers. The common thread was herbal incense or similar synthetic products. Although the exact impact of this massive crackdown on synthetics won’t be known for some time, it is clear that this series of raids and arrests will have much farther-reaching implications than Operation Log Jam did last summer. The smoke screen, a vaporizer shop in Gautier, Mississipp, is staffed by former smokers.

Vaping, the popular term for vapoorizing, is on the rise across the country. More and more people are turning to portable vaporizers to help them quit smoking. These e-cigarettes or e-cigs allow smokers to get their nicotine fix without inhaling smoke from combustion or exposing others to second-hand smoke. Ironically, the employees at a Mississippi vaporizer shop who are ex-smokers can’t sell their product as a smoking cessation device, even though they have all had personal success quitting traditional tobacco by using e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Some businesses still openly traffic herbal incense, offering it for sale in cases to deter shoplifting, but they are in the minority. Increasingly, herbal incense sales are a black market transaction involving a nudge, wink, and an introduction.

According to federal court documents, a smoke shop in Paris, Texas, was selling herbal incense, unlike the similarly named cake shop and candy store located on another street in Paris, Texas. Sweet D’s is a bakery, while Sweetd’s Smoke Shop is the business in question whose practices have come under federal scrutiny, something that does not bode well for the owner. The misprint of the name was in the original source article.
